The sidewalk lay unusually calm that afternoon, wrapped in a golden glow from the lowering sun. Traffic murmured faintly in the distance, and a soft breeze carried the scent of fresh grass and warm pavement. A young mother moved steadily along the path with her two children. Her toddler daughter walked close beside her, gripping a small pink backpack that bounced against her knees with every step. Several feet behind them, her older son followed quietly, his head slightly lowered, his steps careful and slow.

To anyone passing by, it looked like an ordinary family heading home after school. Nothing about the scene suggested urgency or danger. Nothing, that is, except one subtle detail that only one being noticed.

Across the street, Officer Daniel Reyes slowed his patrol car. Beside him sat Rex, a seasoned German Shepherd K9 with years of service behind him. Rex’s ears suddenly stiffened. His body leaned forward, eyes locked onto the boy walking behind his family.

Daniel frowned. Rex didn’t react without reason.

“Easy, buddy,” Daniel murmured, easing the car to the curb. “What is it?”

Rex let out a low whine, his gaze never leaving the child.
