A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the China-Myanmar border region in the early hours of the morning, jolting millions from their sleep and leaving a trail of destruction across three countries. The quake, one of the most powerful to hit the area in recent memory, has already claimed dozens of lives, injured hundreds, and left many more feared trapped beneath collapsed structures.

The Moment Disaster Struck

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicenter was shallow, just 10 kilometers beneath the surface. That shallow depth amplified its impact, sending violent shockwaves across southern China, northern Thailand, and large swaths of Myanmar. Witnesses reported the earth shaking so violently that people could not stay on their feet.

Residents in border towns described being jolted awake by a sound like thunder rolling through the ground itself. “At first, it felt like a truck rumbling past,” one survivor in Yunnan Province recounted. “But within seconds, the walls were cracking and my bed was shaking across the room. We ran barefoot into the street.”

In Myanmar’s Shan State, entire villages were reduced to rubble within minutes. Meanwhile, cities like Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai in northern Thailand experienced extensive damage to older buildings, with frightened residents fleeing into open spaces as aftershocks rippled through the region.

Scenes of Chaos and Fear

Once-bustling towns were thrown into chaos. Streets that just hours earlier had been quiet and calm were suddenly strewn with rubble, broken glass, and collapsed roofs. Families clutched children and elderly relatives, gathering in open areas to wait out the aftershocks. Many had fled their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Eyewitness videos circulating online show terrifying scenes: concrete buildings swaying, chandeliers swinging violently, and storefronts crumbling as crowds scream and scatter. In Chiang Mai, residents reported historic temples sustaining damage, while in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, older apartment blocks collapsed entirely.
