Since he took office for the second time, serving as the 47th president of the country, Donald Trump signed a plethora of executive orders. One of them will lead to passports facing restrictions in the US.

Among the rest, Trump signed executive orders that will affect immigration, employment, and climate changes.

However, the one he signed as soon as he delivered his inauguration speech was titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”

This directive now directly impacts non-binary individuals after Biden’s administration introduced a policy allowing them to mark an X under gender in their passports.

According to Trump’s order, the country now recognizes only two genders, male and female, categories based on biological sex assigned at birth. This means that those identifying as non-binary, genderqueer, or other gender-diverse identity, won’t be able to use the neutral X option determining their gender. This extends to all federal documentation, including passports, birth certificates, and other forms of identification.

Uniland reports that a 2021 survey shows the number of individuals holding a passport with X gender in the States has been 1.2 million.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told employees, “The policy of the United States is that an individual’s sex is not changeable.”

He added that sex, not gender, should be used on official documentation, with passports now facing restrictions in the US.

As per the NBC News, the State Department will no longer issue “X” sex markers for U.S. passports or birth records for U.S. citizens with children born abroad. Further, Marco Rubio told employees “not take any further action” on those applications “pending additional guidance from the Department.”

At the moment, the passports already issued with the X gender options are valid, however, those who need to update their travel documents in the near future may face difficulties.
